Долгое время астрономы спорили, как образуются характерные для этого космического тела длинные огромные полосы.
Малоизученный спутник Сатурна был открыт астрономом Уильямом Гершелем в 1789 году. После запуска американских исследовательских зондов "Кассини", а также "Вояджер-1" и "Вояджер-2" астрономы смогли получить данные о луне Сатурна и дали ответ на мучившую их загадку.
Как передает "Ридус", доказано, что на южном полушарии Энцелада действуют гейзеры, которые периодически извергают потоки воды. Поскольку на поверхности луны Сатурна температура низкая (-240 градусов), то потоки водяного льда и пара застывают в виде характерных "тигровых полос".
Остается понять, почему гейзеры существуют только на южном полушарии Энцелада. Также доказано, что на нем есть океан с теплой водой. Совместный проект США и научного фонда из РФ продолжит исследования луны и поиски жизни там.
